The Grave-post of the Founder

Shogyoji Temple was founded by Dharma Master Ryoen [Mondonosho Taneyoshi] Takehara, on 10th February 1593. The Takeharas were an old warrior family belonging to the Aso clan of Higo Province, nowadays known as Kumamoto Prefecture. During the Time of the Civil Wars, however, the Aso clan was defeated by the Shimazu clan in a fierce battle. Takehara Mondonosho Taneyoshi escaped from Higo and arrived at Futsukaichi in Chikuzen Province. Having been made aware of the impermanence of the world by virtue of his experience fighting bloody wars day after day over a very long period, he entered the priesthood under the Dharma Name of Ryoen and in 1583 became a disciple of Kyonyo Shonin of Honganji Temple. An ancestor of the Oga family, whose traditions go back further than any other family in Futsukaichi, became a follower of Dharma-Master Ryoen and donated about 1000‡u of land for the purpose of building a temple. On 10th February 1593, the temple having at last been completed, Dharma-Master Ryoen received word from Honganji Temple telling him the name to be given the new temple and presenting him with a wooden Buddha image.
