In Buddhism the word Chomon means listening to the teaching with concentration. Since the days of the former Head Priest, Venerable Reion Takehara, there has been a tradition in Shogyoji Temple that one who really wants to attain faith should spend several days within the temple, listening to the Dharma teaching with concentration and really getting to grips with the sutras and commentaries. This period of introspection, called Chomon, is a very important time during which a follower is awakened to what has been done for him or her by supporters, by parents and by the Buddha. The follower comes to feel gratitude to everyone for everything, straightens him or herself out, makes a fresh start and pronounces the Buddha's Name with gratitude.
